Are you a coach who gets business from networking?
Leigh Ann Rodgers will show you how to start your own networking group in one month or less! **************
This “how to” manual is for you if you are a Coach who:
- Is looking for opportunities to meet and build relationships with new clients.
- Is overwhelmed by the high costs of networking groups.
- Recognizes that when people trust you they are more likely to hire you to help them.
- Needs to get more public exposure for your name and/or brand.
- Wants to be able to offer something of valuable to every potential client you meet.
Learn how I started a brand new networking group in 2005 and very successfully grew the organization until 2008 when I sold it to another coach.
Over those three years I learned a lot about how to build and grow a strong group and I know firsthand that leading a networking group enhanced my credibility and opened up many business opportunities for me!
When I started my coaching business, one of the obvious ways to attract new clients was to get involved with networking meetings. In fact, many small business coaches recommend that their clients go to at least 3 networking meetings a week.
I planned to join a few groups myself; however, upon further exploration it became apparent that the majority of strong networking groups in existence cost hundreds of dollars to join, and often had large monthly or quarterly fees as well. The fees were a direct obstacle to me, as a starting business owner with little cash flow. At first, this really frustrated me.
One day it dawned on me that it was within my power to start my own networking group - and within one month, I launched CEN – and it took off like gang busters!
From the inception of CEN, I followed the KISS principle (Keep It Simple Stupid). I didn’t want to create an elaborate organization with Board meetings and bureaucracy. I didn’t want to spend hours upon hours planning meetings or involved in community service projects and fund raisers. I just wanted a group of professionals and business owners to network with.
My original goal was to provide a free networking opportunity for myself and others with as little effort as possible. Everyone that was interested loved this idea too. They were busy just like me. They wanted to come and network without spending a lot of time working “on” the organization itself.
As you read through Everything You Need to Start a Networking Group, you’ll get lots of insight into how I kept things simple – and thus created and ran a very successful and growing organization on less than five hours a month (including the meeting time).
For the first year of CEN, I prided myself on offering a FREE networking group. It cost nothing to join and provided great value in the way of networking and learning; so, with very little effort on my end, the numbers of people who came to the group grew each month. After the first year, I decided, that I was going to charge a minimal meeting fee to help cover the speakers lunch.
Then, after year two, I wanted to create more of a connection among our participants to try and get people coming more regularly and to simplify the payment method as well. So, I created optional Memberships for the amazing price of only $30/year.
30 Members joined in 2008. And, as I told them every meeting, this networking group was “the best deal in town.”
Just after the group turned three years old, it was running like a well oiled machine. I no longer did any covert marketing but week after week, we continued to attract several new people – many of whom would join. My business started taking off and I discovered I was turning away training work because it conflicted with the CEN meeting. One day my husband told me this was crazy – and when I stepped back and looked at it, he was right. It was time to pass the torch to someone else.
The universe works in amazing ways. At the same time I was trying to find a new Leader, another Coach and friend mentioned she was thinking of starting of a networking group in our area. We quickly realized what a great opportunity it was for both of us. She was adopting a well known, solid group and I felt good about passing it on to another coach. In short time, she purchased CEN from me and started her own amazing journey leading the group.
